The Energy sector at global level is living an era of unprecedented transformation and technological innovation with an agenda focused on digitalization, interconnection and environmental sustainability. Energy transition, decarbonization and renewable energies are just some of the objectives of the major stakeholders operating in the sector and that increasingly make use of space technologies and especially of applications derived from space data.
Our country is working to play an increasingly active role in the development of cutting-edge systems and services in the energy sector, accelerating the transition necessary to achieve Europe’s green goals and challenges. In particular, the space sector and integrated applications of satellite data can provide an effective response to the national guidelines defined by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (Piano Nazionale di Ripresa e Resilienza, NRRP) in terms of production, storage and energy sustainability. On 30th September 2021 E. Amaldi Foundation, in collaboration with Politecnico di Torino and gruppo Fante, organized a workshop in Turin dedicated to the opportunities and potential synergies on the use of space-related applications, in particular those promoted by the ESA Ambassador Business Applications platform and InCubed+ of European Space Agency (ESA). The workshop, in a hybrid format, hosted an institutional session and 4 thematic panels with representatives from industry, finance and national institutions to address the issue of innovation between Space and Energy.
During the conference were explored the strategic lines of the Italian Space Agency and Europe on the energy front, the needs, challenges and projects of the big regional and national players. At the end of the event, a discussion on the opportunities and financial instruments for innovation was followed by an analysis of the national prospects for the energy sector enhanced by the integration of space assets.
