Microgravity solutions lab

The Microgravity Solutions Laboratory was created with the goal of turning space into an accelerated experimental model in service of innovation on Earth.

Microgravity conditions represent a unique environment: the absence of weight eliminates physical phenomena that dominate on Earth (such as sedimentation, convection and stratification), making it possible to observe fundamental processes more quickly, in a more controlled way, and with amplified effects. This makes space a true accelerator of knowledge, capable of shortening development times, increasing the reliability of results, and generating solutions with concrete impact on terrestrial systems.

Our laboratory is designed as a technology transfer platform, one that uses microgravity not as an end in itself, but as a means to develop advanced technologies, materials and solutions applicable across industrial, healthcare, energy and environmental fields.

The Microgravity Laboratory focuses in particular on two strategic lines:

E

Radiation Shielding - Microgravity, combined with exposure to ionizing radiation, makes it possible to study the interaction between radiation, materials and biological systems on an accelerated timescale. The laboratory supports the development and validation of new shielding solutions, as alternatives to traditional materials, with applications ranging from deep space to the protection of operators, patients and critical infrastructure on Earth.

E

Materiali Avanzati - Microgravity is a challenging environment that calls for designing innovative materials with different properties, which can also prove useful in harsh terrestrial settings: self-assembly, adaptive response to external stimuli, multifunctional behavior. The laboratory works on advanced materials capable of reacting to mechanical, thermal or radiative stress, paving the way for new generations of solutions for industry, health and sustainability.

The Microgravity Solutions Lab is supported by a set of experimental and digital infrastructures designed to enable applied research, technology validation and industrial transfer. Our facilities make it possible to develop solutions designed for space, but immediately translatable into concrete benefits on Earth.
